The founding of DQS in the year 1985 as the first established registrar for Quality Management Systems in Germany is directly related to the commencement of the ISO 9000 family. The founding shareholders which consist of the 5 major German industry associations, along with the German Standardization Body (DIN) and the German Society for Quality (DGQ) charged DQS to strengthen their customers' competitiveness by neutrally and independently assessing their quality skills. This diversified group of industry associations guarantees that the interests of all industries are equally represented in the Governing Board of DQS.

 

In 2008, UL MSS, the management system certification business division of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) was merged with DQS which resulted in a Top 5 position in the sector of management system certification. The merger of UL MSS and DQS resulted in a change in ownership structure of DQS. UL holds a 27.8-percent stake in DQS.

 

The founding companies DIN and DGQ hold equal stakes of 27.8 percent each. The remaining shares continued to be held by the five industrial associations VCI, VDMA, ZVEI, HDB and Spectaris. Today, more than 29 years later and the preferred registrar for over 20,000 companies worldwide , the dynamic development of the subject of quality management continues unbroken all over the world. And it has become ever so much more colorful and successful.
