Mamaks were founded by Indian Muslims, many of whom trace their ancestry back to the 19th century. The term "mamak" means "uncle" in Tamil and is a respectful way to address an older person. "Teh tarik" is a mamak specialty, where hot milk tea is repeatedly poured from one container to another, creating a thick and frothy beverage. Agility and precision are crucial skills in mamak establishments.

Chinese migrants mainly arrived in the 19th century and started kopitiams (literally "coffee shops") after developing a taste for coffee during British rule in Malaya. Most kopitiam families crafted their own (secret) recipes and techniques for roasting coffee beans, often using a (secret) blend of margarine, sugar, salt, and other (secret) ingredients.

The warung is a traditional family-run café commonly found in Malay villages.
